Clearing A Family Homestead As Easily As Possible

Posted on

Selling the family homestead that's been in the family for years and years can be hard – and not just emotionally. When a family passes on a home from generation to generation, a lot of times the stuff that's in the home, barns, storage sheds and garages comes with it. Generations worth of belongings stored in many areas – and now it's up to you to get the homestead ready for the real estate market. This means it has to be cleared out. How are you going to get it all done? Here, you'll find a few tips to help you do just that.

Rent a Storage Container or Two

The first step to getting organized is to rent a storage container. As you sort through the stashed stuff, you can put the stuff that you plan to keep in the storage container – you won't be spending your time moving boxes of stuff from one place to another just to have to move it again when the moving truck arrives. You load it into the container, close the doors and call the company to have the container picked up and transported to either a different home or a storage facility where it will remain until you request delivery.

If you fill the first container, you can always call and have another delivered and the full one picked up – or keep both of them right there on the site until you're ready to clear the property entirely.

Rent a Dumpster

There will be a lot of stuff that you find that's just not worth keeping. Having somewhere to put it all will make this process much easier – this is where the dumpster comes into play. General waste can be tossed in a disposal dumpster, but if you're going to be doing any renovating which requires the removal of building materials, you'll need a construction dumpster. Building materials are disposed of differently than general garbage.

Hire a Clean-Out Crew

There are companies out there that will come out and do complete estate clean-outs. You can arrange to have the contents of the estate sold, or you can do most of the clearing of keepsakes and the things that you want to keep and then let the crew remove the rest of it.

This will be a lot of work and it can be as emotionally difficult as it is physically. These tips should help you get through it quickly and easily.
